In this study on “Our Being in Christ,” we have focused on the benefits we have because of our position in Christ at the new birth. When we accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior of our lives, we were placed IN CHRIST. In Him, we are children of God with full rights and privileges. We need the confidence that comes from knowing we are children of God. I want to share this teaching from my book, Our Provisions in Christ (pg 72-75).

Romans 8:14-15

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

The word adoption referenced in verse 15 is not an adoption by someone who felt sorry for you. No! You have been lovingly desired by God. He has adopted you. He wanted you for Himself. You are His loved child.

Our heavenly Father wanted us to be in His family so much that He sent His only begotten Son to pour out His blood and give His life as payment for our sins.  God’s intent to bring us into His family by laying our sins on Jesus is recorded in Isaiah 53:10-11:

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

When many sons are brought into the kingdom, God is pleased. Jesus is also pleased when you take your place in Him. In essence, Jesus says, “That’s why I went to the cross! I gave My life so that you could be in a personal relationship with the Father and Me.”

The relationship Jesus has with the Father is not diminished as we grow closer to the Father. Jesus wants us to have the same intimacy and close fellowship with the Father that He has. When you know your heavenly Father intimately, it glorifies Jesus and everything He did. He came to show us the Father (John 14:9). In John 10:10, Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

A more complete description of our position as sons of God is referenced in Galatians 4:6-7:

6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Notice that in verse 7 above, you are an heir. And, as an heir, you obviously have an inheritance!  Some people put that off until the future. They may say, “I will get my inheritance after I die.” Well, no inheritance actually works that way. You don’t get an inheritance when you die; you receive an inheritance when the testator, the person who creates the will, dies. Jesus already died! He rose again! He died to make you an heir. We can begin walking in our inheritance now. Also, you cannot run through your inheritance in this lifetime. You will have plenty left for eternity! You are no more a servant. You are now a son.

Romans 8:16-17

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ;

We know the leading of the Spirit is vital, but the first thing He wants to lead you into is that you are a son of God. He wants to bear witness with us that we are children of God. He wants to reveal to you your place in Him.

The Spirit of God bears witness with me that I am a child of God. You cannot comprehend your inheritance and your position in God without God’s Word. You need the Word to be able to locate your position in Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:9-10

9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

The Holy Spirit reveals to us that we are sons and heirs of God. We have already exceeded anything an earthly heir could receive. We must put this in our hearts and in our mouths; we must believe it and receive it. We are heirs of God! The Holy Spirit will bear witness with our spirits that we are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ. We need to interact with the Teacher (the Holy Spirit) so He can reveal these things to us.
